ARTIST STATEMENT:  

Strong, fearless, confident – these are the words that describe the art of Katrin Smith. Through the dynamic use of bold colour, innovative mixed media techniques and simplicity in design, she draws the viewer into her paintings and strikes a primal emotional connection. While influenced by the great abstract expressionists, Katrin has developed an artistic style that is uniquely her own. She is strongly drawn to the abstract and the power it has to provoke thought and push the limits of our imagination. Each person will see something different when viewing her paintings based on their own unique life experiences. The texture of the painted surface is of particular interest. Multiple layers of paint, medium and collage create a luscious textural landscape – a means by which emotional memories come to life on the canvas.   Katrin is constantly experimenting with exciting new techniques and invites her viewers to touch her art and experience its textural energy.   In broad terms, her themes explore the concept of perception and the meaning of art. Her creative process is intuitive. Avoiding a repetitive formula, Katrin seldom starts with the end in mind – each painting unfolds in its own unique way.
